Waste Management Truck

Last year, the City made changes to bulk item collection as a part of broader efforts to promote cleaner streets and neighborhoods. Over the past year, we've heard feedback about those changes and have explored options to increase bulk collection frequency and improve the appearance of the city. Read the summary below and use the survey tool to share your thoughts on the new option for bulk item collection.

What is Bulk item collection?

Bulk items include residential trash that is too large for a container, such as appliances, furniture, or fence panels. It does not include brush/green waste, construction debris, or hazardous waste.

Current service level:

  • Bulk items are collected once per month from the front curb on the same week as brush pickup.
  • Items should be set out by Monday of the pickup week and will be collected by Friday.
  • Bulk items are limited to 4 cubic yards per collection (roughly equivalent to 2 couches or large appliances).
  • Residents may schedule one additional free collection per month through Waste Management.

Potential new bulk item collection service:

  • Bulk items would be collected once per week on the day of the resident's regular trash collection.
  • Items would be set out and collected on the same day.
  • Bulk items are limited to 2 cubic yards per collection (roughly equivalent to a couch or large appliance).
  • Service delivery would increase from once per month to four times per month,
  • This option would cost each single family residence an additional $2.34 per month (about $0.59 per week) because of the higher frequency of collection and increase in potential volume of collection.
  • The discounted senior rate would not be impacted by this change and would remain the same.

Completely agree with many other comments on there about the lack of waste mgmt picking up when they say they will. Our bulk and tree limb service is NEVER on schedule and it makes it very hard to gauge when to actually put something out. The current arrangement is not working well and needs to be cleaned up.

We’ve already had our bills increased and reduced the amount we can throw away. This addition is welcomed but absolutely should not cost us even more.

Jgerhart over 5 years ago

I put some bulk items on the curb on Sep 29th and it is still sitting there waiting to be picked up, 23 days later and weeks past the supposed pick up date. I don't think any bulk items I've put out there have ever been picked up according to schedule. It would be nice if you could get the current service working before you try to charge more money for additional services.

Thank you

Currently, bulk items are placed on curve side, will weekly pickup change. Waste management has missed my regular pickup on multiple occassions. I would not be pretty to bulk items sitting in front 2 weeks or more.
Thank you.

Brandi913 over 5 years ago

No thank you. They never come on my designated brush week as it is. I have call them to find out why they missed my street AGAIN.

Imagine how ugly it would be if you added unsightly furniture to the mix! Not worth the $

DNelson over 5 years ago

For us once a month bulk collection is plenty enough. In fact, we prefer it, because having old ripped up furniture and other ugly items sit on the curb every single week would mean a very unsightly street almost all the time. I very much prefer when I drive through my neighborhood to see nice, clean curb and sidewalks, not ones almost constantly piled up with junk. It is not so hard to plan disposing of your old couch so that it coincides with the monthly bulk collection day. Therefore, once a month is good.

Currently, the bulk truck does not come to our street unless we call. They never come on the designated monthly day. And then when we call, they try to charge us for additional pick up, even though they never came the first time.

This month, my husband had to call three times to get them to come take tree trimmings from the storm. The first truck came and left without taking anything. They just looked at it and said they needed a truck with an arm, which they don’t have, as they weren’t going to take it by hand. The next truck only took part of it, saying it was too much, even though we had measured. They said they would take it if we paid extra. Finally the third truck took it all. This is our only experience with using bulk pick up.

We don’t need to pay more. We just need them to do the job.

This is what happens when the city delegates its Responsibilities for the commons to for-profit companies. All they know how to do is ask for more money and throw more money at the problems. We need better service.

We should have regular trash and recycling pick up twice a week and monthly bulk up that actually comes every month. That should not be too hard.

We are happy with once a month bulk but would like weekly or biweekly brush pickup

Dwightroberson over 5 years ago

I'm not interested in paying more when I don't get what I pay for now. Telling folks that you'll only pickup what's in a trashcan is ridiculous. It doesn't sit well when I have to spread my trash out over 2-3 weeks after a party and/or christmas.

Jwickers over 5 years ago

We are happy with once a month, no problem planning or understanding when our bulk pick up is.
Thank you for the fab big bins!
We love them.

Joe Neighbor over 5 years ago

The extra payment would be worth it if brush/green waste was included in the proposal.

rkliebert over 5 years ago

I am happy the way things are currently BUT if it means a clean up community wide and my paying a little more would help then I have no problems with that.

I support of greater utilization of the existing contract. When the City used the "next week is bulk pickup" signs at the entrances of the subdivisions, there was increased awareness and utilization of the monthly bulk service. Many residents are not aware of the additional bulk item pick up once per month already included in the monthly fee we pay. The city should used a more simplified method of communicating when residents are to put out their bulk items. While the current flyer is full of valuable information - it is overwhelming. A simple "your Bulk week is the 1st, 2nd ,3rd of 4th week" refrigerator magnet/card would be an excellent idea. My concern is that we will pay more and bulk trash will still be left at the curb for multiple weeks because the resident didn't put the item at the right location or it's blocked by a vehicle. Maybe it is time to return to the manned vehicles - or more education and information needs to be made avail in a concise and clear. Additionally, when a resident has left an item out and it does not meet the requirements for bulk pick, no one communicated with the resident. So the resident if left to think that they were missed in the pick up instead of being educated that their items did not meet the pick up requirement. lets utilize the existing contract and increase our efforts as a City to educate and and enforce the existing rules for bulk and trash pick up.

I'm not clear on what we would do during a "spring cleaning", or getting ready to move when you throw away a lot of things. I don't think multiple bags are considered a "bulk item". Are you supposed to spread this out over months? That's hard to do when you move.

I agree with others, that trash, water, and other city services has been "paying more for less".

RobertEden over 5 years ago

Love the green containers cause can throw stuff in their without bags. Saves on bags & easier to dispose of stuff and love the recycle bins. Saves on amount of trash. Bulk is just right as it is now.

PinkyGirl over 5 years ago

We have already had our trash pickup reduced to once a week, when you used to pick up twice a week, (so now we have to plan ahead what we eat the first half of the week so the trash isn’t stinking...especially in Summer.)
Then we were forced to use your trash cans instead of our own.
Next, we were forced into recycling using your trash cans.
Then the quantities of bulk pick up were changed so it takes forever to get rid of anything.
Oh and with Fall upon us and the tons of leaves on the ground, they won’t get picked up anymore unless in the trash can with the lid closed, when we used to be able to leave trash bags next to the trash can with the old trucks, (which you got rid of)...All the while increasing the cost to us, the residents.

Waste Management don’t pick up the bulk trash half the time, so you have to waste your time calling them.
Why on Earth would I want to pay extra money for this.

Not to mention that in reality, I probably wouldn’t even have enough bulk to put out every week, so I would be paying for nothing.

It’s a horrible idea!

Cheek over 5 years ago

I'm torn between loving the increase in frequency of pick up and disliking the raise in price of the water bill. I know nothing is free, but if this proposed schedule goes into effect, I am definitely going to make every effort to have some kind of bulk trash available for pick up each week since I'll be paying for it anyway.

Aderr02 over 5 years ago

This is stupid idea.
You can't get Waiste Management to pick up Trash in the designated locations which is Alleyways in the Highlands South. Now your wanting to increase the number of Bulk Trash pick up from once a month to four times a month and charge the residents more. Get Waste Management to pick up trash in the Highlands South area with there old trucks and people that actually put the trash in the truck. Previously they would pick up one piece of bulk trash each week when they picked up the trash. Now they can't pick up the trash they are supposed to because "they can't get the new trucks in the alley's".
We have already been charged more for less service, Waste Management was able to reduce their employees so they saved money which increased their profits even though the either purchased or leased these new trucks that are too big to turn into the alleyways.
Our City Council that bought into this deal with Waste Management was given a royal snow job and they need to get it corrected. Return to the old Trash Trucks that had employees on them, pick up the trash once a week if that is the best you can do and have Waste Management pick up 1 piece of bulk trash per week in the designated pick up spot for that residence.

I'm slowly throwing away my fence due to the 4 cubic yards of anything unless it was a fence nonsense. On top of that, they flat out never showed up during the last pickup cycle. (I'm here all day, trust me they never even came through the neighborhood). So why should I pay more if they're not delivering on the current service level?
