In November 2017, voters approved $15 million for development and improvement of parks and recreation facilities throughout the city, with a special emphasis on improving accessibility to parks and play structure for children of all abilities.
To achieve that goal, the creative play structure at Virginia Weaver Park will be replaced with a new creative playground with enhanced accessibility for children with special needs. The original playground was built by the community, and community will have the opportunity to participate in the design and construction of the new structure.

Would Be Nice To Add More Lighted BasketBall Courts, Soccer Fields, Or Tennis Courts To Keep More Teens And Adults Getting Active With Each Other, And Avoid Them
Very nice conceptual rendering. I would agree with others for more covering over play area and maybe that is already include and not shown in this drawing. I would like to see included a wet or splash area for children to keep cool similar to Hillside Village Mall or Kyle Warren Park in Dallas. We should have splash parks included at many of our existing parks as to alleviate future congestion at our future pool/aquatic center. The splash area at Hillside Village Mall here in Cedar Hill shows how families enjoy playing and cooling off. Sometimes you just want to take the kids to an area to jump and play in the water for an hour or two especially when the weather is like it is now
I like the design but shade coverings should be included. This is possible in 2018. Children who have sun exposure conditions are considered special needs. All children deserve to play and just be kids.
I like the new design as well. My only suggestion is what others have stated already, would be to add more covered areas. My family and I have frequented that park on many occasions, but never stay to long because of the heat. A shaded pavilion would be a welcome change.
The one that Leathers designed in San Marcus has a lot of entertaining activities that the kids appear to really enjoy. It even has water misters to help the kids on really hot days. I hope the proposed one for Cedar Hill matches or exceeds the one we saw.

What concerns me most is the lack of shade. I appreciate the shaded seating but I would like shade for my kids while they're playing as well. The technology exists to completely cover both of these play areas with shade and I see no reason why it shouldn't be implemented here. My family regularly does not use our parks during the summer months because of the extreme temperatures of Texas. Covering them, which could be facilitated by a grant from the American Academy of Dermatology or other organizations, would make it much more usable during the brutal summer temperatures. A couple of months ago, I took my kids on a walk from the Rec Center using our wonderful trail system to this park. Even in April, it was warm and it would have been really nice to have a shaded park to play at upon our arrival.
Another minor concern I have is there doesn't seem to be enough regular swings to meet demand. Considering the amount that is currently there, two doesn't seem like nearly enough. In general, it seems like it's missing the spirit of the current park. One of the best parts of the playground that's there now is that it seemingly goes forever and every part is connected. I understand why it needs to be replaced, but this design misses the mark. On a positive note, even though I don't currently have a toddler, I appreciate the toddler play area, something our other parks are sorely missing.
