Current library building

In November 2017, voters approved $20 million in general obligation bonds for a new public library. The project will replace the current buillding with a facility designed to meet current and future needs, based on Texas Public Library Standards. The new library will provide for technological enhancements, flexible program space, and community meeting rooms that are not feasible in the existing structure.

The new library will be located adjacent to a new signature park with features and amenities for residents and visitors.

  • What is the 3rd Place?

After gathering the broad public input, the design team translated the feedback on materials and functionality desired and created a library design that aligns with the community’s priorities. This was a tall task. Our community asked that the library be the 3rd Place which is the intersection of home and community, where everyone is welcomed. The 1st and 2nd place is typically home and work/school respectively.

  • Brainstorming with the Community

The library vision word cloud came directly from the community, they continue to be engaged online and offline. We had workshops with Mayor’s Teen Council and with the Citizens Design Committee, gathered feedback from our senior community, conducted community fun day to gather input from all ages, hosted drive thru Feel Good Fridays where the community gave us feedback on the top priorities for the library and park and hosted pop up surveys at the parks throughout Cedar Hill to get feedback.

The library site was the top choice of the community, the 2017 Citizens Site Selection committee reviewed sites throughout the community and selected this location. The location was selected because it aligned with the guiding principles- bringing the outside in, keeping it wild, operational effectiveness, and sustainability. We invite you to check out the Library in a Park Concept which is an illustrative picture of the future Library in a Park.

    Did You Know?
Cedar Hill has over 36 miles of existing trails that will eventually connect to the future Library in a Park! The projected plan is for this trail system to connect to Pleasant Run and Balcones (1382) creating a path from Midtown to Uptown Cedar Hill where you can run, walk or bike to your heart's content.
